Abstract
Nurses, as a profession, have demonstrated the ability to evaluate the entire picture of a patient's or population's trajectory, and create meaningful interventions to prevent disease and promote health and wellbeing, while also improving efficiency. Americans are more likely to experience worse health outcomes than their peers in other high-income nations, and the cost of care continues to increase despite lagging reimbursement models. Meaningful measurement of the ambulatory care nurse's contribution to health care as a catalyst for value may advance transformation of this unsustainable system. This article summarizes the importance of meaningful measurement in ambulatory care nursing and the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing's second edition report detailing the state of the industry related to ambulatory care nursing and measurement.
