Abstract
Why do people suddenly lose consciousness? When the issue is cardiac, what can be done about it? While “passing out” is something we are all familiar with, from people “swooning” in movies to sudden cardiac death on the sports field, the reasons and seriousness of a syncopal incident range from the easily diagnosable and treatable to the extremely serious, requiring life-saving intervention. This chapter will explore the reasons for cardiac syncope, how causes are diagnosed, and what treatments are currently available based on diagnosis.
