Abstract
Somatic symptom disorder is diagnosed when an individual presents with one or more physical symptoms (such as pain, weakness or shortness of breath) that are distressing or cause disruption in daily life. The individual experiences excessive and out of proportion thoughts, feelings, or behaviors related to the physical symptoms or health concerns. Patients with somatic symptom disorders often visit primary care physicians rather than a mental health clinician. They may have difficulty accepting that their anxiety or concerns about their physical symptoms are excessive, and costing them to spend lot of time, energy as well as money. Treatment of this disorder mainly centers around encouraging patients to have regular visits with a trusted healthcare professional who can offer support, and reassurance. Role of treating physician also consists of providing psychoeducation and monitoring of symptoms, as well as avoiding unnecessary tests and treatment options. Patient should also be screened followed by adequately treated for comorbid psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety.
