- Effectively addressing OUD is vital for patient safety, influencing the success of treatments for acute conditions, and is the most efficient use of medical resources
- The acute care setting provides a key chance to identify OUD, start medication treatment, and connect patients to continuing care
- Important considerations when caring for patients with OUD in the inpatient setting
- Review the diagnostic criteria for opioid use disorder
- Identify the opioid withdrawal state and assess severity
- Review the commonly used strategies to initiate buprenorphine in the inpatient setting
